When coworkers ask you about your favorite genre, do you quickly change the subject to your boss’s outfit choice? When asked what you’re currently reading, do you quickly throw your e-reader into you bag and explain that you’ve instead been binge-watching Downton Abbey? Are you currently in a book club and you’ve been complaining to your best friend because the book you’ve been assigned is what you call a “real-people book”?

It’s okay. You’re not alone.

My name’s Maria. I’m a full-time writer and editor for a NYC magazine, but I spend my nights, weekends, and three-hour commute pouring over a genre that I thought I’d outgrow like a MySpace account – Young Adult Literature. I read a lot of it, and there sure is quite a pool of it out there: good ones, bad ones, stupid ones, unknown ones, ones that underestimate the readers’ intelligence, ones that know their YA readers aren’t actually YAs, ones that have vampires, ones that have time travel…the list goes on and on. So I thought I’d put my opinions into one place, on this blog, to let fellow YA fanatics know what I think of the books I read.

Hey, YA may not be Shakespeare…but it’s pretty compelling, all the same.

    • I absolutely love Libba Bray and Cassandra Clare, and I’ve recently gotten into Marissa Meyer’s series. I also think John Green has a really compelling YA voice. I haven’t read Fangirl yet, but I will have to give it a shot if you love her so much!
